Osteria Applausi (Applause in Italian) is one of three Italian restaurants owned and operated by the Marchetti family in Fairfield county. This successful family of restaurants grew from a very humble beginning when Maria Marchetti opened her restaurant, Maria's Trattoria in Norwalk in 1983. Since then, Columbus Park Trattoria opened in Stamford in 1985, Osteria Applausi opened in Greenwich in 1994, and Tarantino Restaurant opened in Westport the same year.
Maria had a simple desire when she opened her first restaurant: to delight her customers with the same authentic, soul-warming Italian food that she grew up with in the town of Gravina in Puglia, Italy, and to make them feel like they've come to dine at her own table at home. Since then, the Marchettis have never wavered from Maria's original ambition. They continue to offer dishes inspired by those still served in Gravina, and each customer is treated like family.
And because authentic Italian food requires only the finest and freshest ingredients, every cut of meat and fish is hand-selected, and Maria makes handmade pasta daily. The family is so serious about every aspect of the food they serve that they actually grow their own olives in an ancient town near Assisi, in Umbria, Italy, so that they can use their very own cold-pressed olive oil.
If you want to experience a true taste of Italy and be treated like one of the family, come to Osteria Applausi.
Beppe Cornacchia, co-owner and manager of Osteria Applausi, has been a vital part of the restaurant since 2002. Prior to managing Applausi, Beppe lived in Tuscany since 1985 and worked in many successful Italian restaurants. He brought his vision of "La Cucina Italiana" to Fairfield County so that our customers could experience the simple, wholesome and delicious dishes that are a tradition in Italy.
Beppe also orchestrated the beautiful renovation of Osteria Applausi in 2010 to make the interior more metropolitan, giving it a sleek New York City feel in Old Greenwich. The menu was similarly updated to make it more contemporary and healthy.
Although all the dishes served at Osteria Applausi are favorites, these three dishes are considered the restaurant's specialties:
Cavatelli con Salsicce e Funghi is a local dish from Maria's hometown of Gravina, and made by every grandma in the area. Handmade cavatelli are married with sausage and fresh mushrooms for a heartwarming dish.
Branzino al Sale is a dish found in the best seaside resorts in Italy and features sea bass baked in an aromatic sea salt crust, the process of which extracts unimaginable juices and delicate flavors.
Ossobuco all Milanese is veal shank slow-braised in vegetables with saffron risotto, resulting in a tender and savory delight you won't forget.
All desserts are homemade in-house with natural ingredients, and like the entrees, come straight out of the streets of Italy. Try Bigne al Cioccolato Caldo (cream puffs with warm chocolate) or Sporcamusi (puff pastry filled with a Chantilly cream).
Osteria Applausi also offers wines to complement all of their delectable creations. Their wine selection includes excellent wines from many regions in Italy. Customers enjoy a wide range of varietals including Barolo, Vernaccia di San Gimingnano, California Napa Cabernet and even Spumante (Ferrari from Trentino).
